Myelodysplasia: Covers a group of disorders that result in the inability to produce enough healthy mature blood cells. Those disorders include
1. Acute myeloid leukemia
3. Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia
5. Myelodysplastic syndromes
6. Refractory anemia
7. Refractory anemia with excess blasts
8. Refractory anemia with ring sideroblasts
The diagnosis of myelodysplasia by itself is not reportable because the term includes both non-malignancies and malignancies. Follow-back to the physician is necessary to determine whether or not this is a malignancy.
This term may be used as an alternate name for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS); however, the terms myelodysplastic syndrome or MDS should be used somewhere in the record.
