Renal tubule: The renal tubule begins in the glomerular capsule and has three different designations along its course. The proximal convuluted tubule, the descending loop of Henle, and the distal convoluted tubule (the end of the nephron). The proximal and the distal convuluted tubules are located in the cortex of the kidney; the loop of Henle is located in the medulla. The distal tubules of several nephrons empty into a common collecting tubule that transports urine back into the renal pyramids of the medulla and then into a minor calyx of the renal pelvis.
