This section provides an overview of the percent of cases and age-adjusted incidence rates by single age at diagnosis for the major cancer sites in the National Childhood Cancer Registry (NCCR).

The risk of developing childhood cancers vary greatly by cancer site and age.

  • The following cancers have the highest incidence rates at different ages (Figure 2.2):
    • neuroblastoma for age less than 1 year,
    • leukemia for ages 1 to 6 years,
    • leukemia and central nervous system neoplasms for ages 7 to 10 years.
  • The risk of being diagnosed with lymphomas increases with age and is the highest after 15 years of age (Figure 2.2).
  • Non-Hispanic Black children 5 years of age or younger have lower risk of developing leukemia compared to Non-Hispanic White and Hispanic children (Figure 2.3).
  • Epithelial neoplasms and melanomas increase with age (Figures 2.2 and 2.3;XI).
  • Non-Hispanic White children have a higher risk of developing central nervous system neoplasms across all ages at diagnosis (Figure 2.3;III).
