Working with the Columns and Rows

Order, Filter, and Lock are commands that affect the columns and rows of a results matrix. These commands are available on the Matrix menu and on a menu that appears when you click the right mouse button. To access the right mouse button menu, highlight the columns or rows you want to change, then right-click within the highlighted heading(s).

Ordering Variables in Columns or Rows

SEER*Stat allows you to specify more than one variable as a row, column, or page variable on the Table tab. The order of the variables on the Table tab determines the nesting of the rows or columns in the table. The Order command allows you to change the order of the variables in a row or column of a matrix. Highlight a row or column, then select Order from the Matrix menu or right mouse button menu. Select a variable and use the Move Up or Move Down buttons to rearrange it as desired.

For example, you may have specified race and sex as row variables (in that order) on the Table tab. If our example has three values for race (All races, White, Black) and two values for sex (Male, Female) then the six rows of the matrix would appear in the following order:

After you execute the session, you may decide that you would prefer to see the order of the variables reversed.  If you use the Set Variable Order dialog to make sex the first row variable, then the rows would be listed in the following order:

Locking Columns or Rows

SEER*Stat allows you to lock both columns and rows in a results matrix. Locking a column means that the column and all the columns to the left of it will not scroll off the left side of the window, but instead will be held constantly in view. In the same way, locking a row will hold that row and all rows above it so that they cannot be scrolled off the top of the window. This can be helpful if you want to compare columns or rows that would otherwise be too far apart to fit on the screen at the same time.

To lock columns or rows, highlight them and choose Lock from the Matrix menu or right mouse button menu. A thickened cell border is displayed to indicate that the columns or rows are locked. To unlock previously locked columns and rows, repeat the same procedure you used to lock them.

Note that in a Case Listing matrix, it is only possible to lock columns, not rows.

Resizing Columns or Rows

You may resize the rows or columns of the output matrix to any height or width. To resize a row or column, place the cursor over the boundary line at the right of the heading for the column, or the bottom of the heading for the row, which you want to resize. When in the right area, the cursor changes to a line with arrows pointing out of each side. Once the cursor is in this position, click and drag the border of the row or column to the desired size.

Multiple rows or columns may be resized at once. To do this, highlight all the rows or columns you wish to resize, then resize any one of them as described above. All of the selected rows or columns will change to the same size.
