Definition
There are several different muscles of the abdominal wall.
- External oblique: Originates in the lower eight ribs and inserts into the iliac crest and the anterior rectus sheath. Main function is compressing the abdominal contents.
- Internal oblique: Originates in the iliac crest and inserts into the costal cartilage, the lower three or four ribs. Main function is compressing the abdominal contents.
- Rectis abdominis: Originates in the crest of pubis, pubic symphysis and inserts into the cartilage of the 5th, 6th, and 7th ribs. Main function is flexing the vertebral column and assisting in compressing the abdominal wall.
- Transversus abdominis: Originates in the iliac crest and lower six ribs and inserts into the xiphoid cartilage and linea alba. Main function is compressing the abdominal contents.
