This drug should be coded as hormonal treatment for thyroid cancer. After thyroid surgery, the thyroid hormone medication such as cytomel and synthroid are prescribed often for life. This drug has two benefits: it supplies the missing hormone the thyroid would normally produce, and it suppresses the production of thyroid-simulating hormone (TSH) from the pituitary gland. High TSH levels could conceivably stimulate any remaining cancer cells to grow.
