A synthetic progestin; FDA approved indications include palliative treatment in advanced endometrial and breast carcinoma. Also for the treatment of anorexia, cachexia, and significant weight loss in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome; administered orally.
Code Megestrol if given as first course of treatment in advanced/metastatic endometrial or breast cancer, uterine sarcomas (usually in low grade endometrial stromal sarcoma, adenosarcoma, or ER/PR positive uterine sarcomas), or in early stage endometroid carcinoma in which fertility preservation is desired.
Megestrol can be given alone, or in combination with other progestational agents or with chemotherapy.
DO NOT code when given as an appetite stimulant.
