Definition

5'-nucleotidase (5'-NT) is a protein produced by the liver. A test can be done to measure the amount of this protein in the blood. It distinguishes between hepatic and skeletal metastases. This protein is more specific than alkaline phosphatase in determining hepatobiliary disease, although it is more technically difficult.
