Abstractor Notes

This code may be used for cases diagnosed prior to 1/1/2010.

Prior to 2010, Therapy-related myelodysplastic syndrome was categorized separately. In the 2008 WHO Manual, Therapy-related myeloid leukemia, Therapy-related myelodysplastic syndrome, and Therapy-related myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms are grouped under 9920/3. This grouping reflects the fact that each of these neoplasms are caused by previous therapy and they are grouped in this manner to facilitate analysis.
For further information on the coding and abstracting of this neoplasm, see 9920/3.

Be aware that cases diagnosed prior to 2010 will be coded 9987/3.

Definition

Bone marrow failure that develops after treatment with chemotherapy or radiation therapy. There is no predominant cell type that is dysplastic, and the marrow aspirate is often inadequate to review for dysplasia, as the marrow is often hypocellular with fibrosis.

Therapy-related MDS arise as a result of cytotoxic chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.
