This specialized database incorporates updated population denominator data, facilitating the calculation of cancer incidence rates for detailed Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) subpopulations at the state level.
Database Details
This database is available only in the Rate session of SEER*Stat for the November 2024 data submission. The database contains the same variables as the SEER Research Plus Limited Field Data (21 Registries) for cases diagnosed 2000-2022. To analyze Frequency, Case-Listing, and Survival (observed survival or cause-specific survival) by AANHPI groups, researchers are encouraged to use the SEER Research Plus database.
Detailed AANHPI Groups Available for Rate Calculation Include:
-
Asian American
- Asian Indian/Pakistani
- Chinese
- Filipino
- Japanese
- Kampuchean
- Korean
- Laotian
- Vietnamese
-
Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander
- Native Hawaiian
- Guamanian/Chamorro
- Samoan
Additional Racial Groups Available for Rate Calculation Include:
- All Races
- Non-Hispanic White
- Non-Hispanic Black
Geography Coverage and Available Geographic Identifiers Include:
- Geography is limited to the state level because sparse data prevents reliable population estimation at substate levels.
- Cases diagnosed from SEER 21 registries are included, except for Alaska Native Tumor Registry and Seattle-Puget Sound Cancer Registry because they do not cover the entire state population.
Population Denominators: Data Sources and Methods
Population denominators were produced by Woods and Poole Economics, Inc. under contract with NCI, using demographic survival models by U.S. state, sex, and age cohort for the AANHPI groups listed above. These estimates follow SEER incidence race/ethnicity priority rules and use a bridged single-race definition for all AANHPI groups, except for Native Hawaiian, whose populations include all individuals of Hawaiian descent, regardless of their multiracial status. Populations are controlled to NCI’s U.S. County bridged-race population estimates used for SEER’s April 2025 release. Detailed methodology developed by W&P is described in W&P's technical report (PDF, 698 KB).
Data Limitations and Analytical Considerations
-
This database also includes two additional racial/ethnic groups; however, rates should not be calculated for these groups:
- Non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN), because AIAN individuals residing outside of Purchased/Referred Care Delivery Area (PRCDA) may be misclassified, and PRCDA status is not available in this database to identify these patients.
- Hispanic (Excl Asian and Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander (NHoPI)), because Hispanic ratesare typically reported for all races combined.
- To generate rates for these groups, users are advised to use the SEER Research or SEER Research Plus Databases with the appropriate cohort selections.
- Area-based socioeconomic attributes (e.g. county- or census tract-) are not available in this database because this database is limited to state-level geography.
- Populations for "Other Asian American" and "Other Pacific Island" are available but are not recommended for use as denominators in rate calculations because corresponding cancer incidence numerators are not available.
- No population estimates were produced for "Other (assumed API, NOS)" and "Unknown Race" due to the lack of comparable category in the decennial census data.
